Flag Day is a day dedicated to the celebration and recognition of the national flag of a country. In the United States, Flag Day is observed on June 17th each year, commemorating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the national flag in 1777.

History of Flag Day

• Originated in 1885 when Bernard Cigrand, a school teacher, began promoting June 17 as Flag Day.

• President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day in 1916.

• In 1949, Congress officially recognized June 17 as National Flag Day.
