Groundhog Day is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2nd each year. The day is centered around a groundhog, a rodent also known as a woodchuck, which is said to predict the weather for the upcoming weeks.

The main event occurs in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where thousands of people gather to watch a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil emerge from his burrow. According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if he does not, an early spring is expected.

History

The tradition of Groundhog Day has its roots in ancient European celebrations of Candlemas Day, which marked the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. German settlers brought the tradition to America, where the groundhog became the animal of choice for weather prediction.
