John Peralta
My name is John, and I am a Diversional Recreational Therapist working at St. Andrews Village. My journey in Diversional and Recreational Therapy began when I came to New Zealand as an international student from the Philippines to study Diversional Therapy and Community Health Level 4 at Kauri Academy. During my clinical placement at St. Andrews Village, I discovered how meaningful this profession is, and after graduating, I was fortunate to continue my journey there as part of the Activities team.
My background is originally in healthcare, having worked as a Medical Technologist in the Philippines before moving to New Zealand. I also worked for one year as a Health Care Assistant in a correction facility, which strengthened my understanding of person-centred care, dignity, safety, and respect in challenging environments. In my current role, I support residents through meaningful activities, social connection, one-on-one engagement, outings, and activities that promote wellbeing.
One of my most memorable DRT moments is doing one-on-one interventions with residents, where we simply sit calmly, share stories without judgment, and create meaningful connection. These quiet moments have taught me many life lessons from the residents themselves. They remind me that DRT is not only about planning activities, but also about being present, listening with respect, and making each person feel valued.
